Design Hope Toronto Open Artist Call
Design Hope Toronto is seeking creative individuals to take part in a unique fundraising initiative to help Toronto’s less fortunate.

Now in our seventh year, Design Hope Toronto is recruiting artists, designers and architects to create and donate 2- and 3-dimensional works of art based on the theme of ‘shelter’.

The artwork will be auctioned off at our annual event, scheduled for Friday, April 13, 2012. All proceeds will alleviate suffering in our community by raising funds for the Parkdale Activity-Recreation Centre (PARC) and Edmond Place.

After six years, more than 150 pieces of literal and abstract representations of shelter have been donated by artists, raising over $80,000 for Dixon Hall’s Homeless, Hostels and Housing program and Parkdale Activity-Recreation Centre/Edmond Place.

Design Hope Toronto is accepting artist applications for our 2012 event until December 2, 2011. Artwork will be accepted on a first come, first served basis in order of commitment, with priority given to new contributors. Acceptance will also be based on ensuring a balanced cross-section of media is represented. Artists who are accepted will have three months to create their one-of-a-kind works of art.

ART OF THE DANFORTH is a large-scale, multi-disciplinary art event held along Danforth Avenue from Greenwood to Woodbine. Event dates: May 20-June 10, 2012.
The goals for 2012 are:
· Bring community members together through the creation of art
· Increase the sense of history and engagement in the community
· Explore the aesthetic possibilities of urban space
· Increase pedestrian traffic down Danforth between Greenwood & Woodbine
AoD 2012 is inclusive and open to all forms of artistic practice. Free public exhibitions of art in all mediums, site-specific installations and the popular Art in Stores program will run throughout the festival, May 20 to June 10, 2012. Community workshops will be held leading up to and during the festival, allowing community members to participate in the creation of visual art exhibits and performances. On the final weekend of the event (June 9 & 10), the art projects of the festival will be supplemented with free outdoor performances and activities.
We believe that art is a powerful tool that can be used to forge new connections between groups and transform the social and physical space in which we exist. With this project, we want to survey “what is” (physical structures, cultural heritage and individual talents), and creatively explore “what could be.” We would like to distinguish this event from other art walks in the city by encouraging ideas that transform our shared spaces in creative, profound and/or whimsical ways.
Artist Opportunities:
All participating artists will be promoted online at www.artofthedanforth.com and in our event brochure.
ART IN STORES: The Art in Stores component of Art of the Danforth matches artists with local retailers. Selected artists will be partnered with a local store to present 1-5 pieces of their work in a non-gallery space. Non-paying. Notifications of acceptance will go out at the beginning of February, 2012. DEADLINE: December 16, 2011.
PERFORMERS: AoD is accepting proposals from performance artists (music, dance, you name it) interested in presenting work outdoors on the final weekend of the event (June 9 & 10, 2012). Non-paying. DEADLINE: December 16, 2011.
COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS: 3-6 artists or artist groups will be chosen to hold free arts workshops for community members of all ages and backgrounds on the weekends of the event. Workshops will be 1-2 hours long and may be in any artistic discipline. We are taking proposals for one time workshops or series of up to three. Preference will be given to workshops which are accessible to participants of all backgrounds and skill levels, and which produce a display or performance that can be presented to the public as part of the AoD event. Small honorariums available. DEADLINE: December 16, 2011.
COLLABORATORS, A Piece of a City: A neighbourhood-based curatorial initiative presented in Zone 2 (Coxwell to West Lynn Ave) as part of the large installations component of Art of the Danforth. This project brings together a group of emerging and established artists to envision a series of site-specific installations and performances that address the interlocking themes of locality, community & contemporary art practice. Photo Life and Photo Solution Magazines Present New Annual Photo Contest: The World We Live In

September 13, 2011 — Leading Canadian photography magazines, Photo Life and Photo Solution, are inviting North American photographers to submit their best work to The World We Live In, in either the Pro or Amateur categories, under three themes: Humanity, The Environment, and Our Interconnected World.

The world we live in is in constant evolution. Climatic, economic and social changes each have a great impact on our environment and on our personal lives. With The World We Live In, Photo Life and Photo Solution magazines invite photographers from all walks of life to capture images of people, cultural diversity, breathtaking landscapes as well as environmental statements, and to share their vision of the world.

Participants are invited to submit their images through a simple on-line interface. Participation fees are required, with special rates for subscribers. The submission deadline is November 30.

Winning images will be selected by a jury composed of photographic industry professionals. Winners will be awarded prizes valued at more than $35,000, including travel vouchers, digital cameras and lenses, photo bags and many other items of photo gear for both the professional and the amateur. The local media will be there as well as the panel members who helped in the selection of the images for the calendar.

The 13 main calendar images will be on exhibit and many of the club photographers featured in the calendar plan to attend the event.

The calendar represents a towering achievement for our club as it draws on our collective and numerous abilities in the creation of such an exceptional product. Join us to celebrate and share in the successful completion of this huge photo club initiative.

We start with a critique of student photos, what was done right and what could be improved on. We apply the guidelines of composition, then cropping, colour correction, tone correction and retouching for an impactful edge. Next we look at the best printing paper options. A printing work flow is then demonstrated to ensure an accurate print.

BEACH 2012 CALENDAR EXPECTED SOON

The Beach community which helped sell 1,500 copies of the Beach 2011 Calendar to support Community Centre 55 and the Beach Photo Club can expect the 2012 version this summer.
A remarkable Community Selection Panel has selected the main images for next year’s Calendar. The panelists, as seen in the image on the right are: (left to right) Barbara DeAngelis of Pippins Tea; Dan Hill, internationally known Canadian singer/songwriter/ recording artist/five-time Juno Award winner; Debbie Visconti, Executive Director, Community Centre 55 and Jim Curran of CBC Radio’s Metro Morning and Here and Now.

The panelists have selected about 50 of the most evocative images from 150 chosen by the Technical/Artistic Advisors: Ellen Anger, a Greater Toronto Council of Camera Clubs (GTCCC) judge; and Fred Lum, Globe and Mail photographer. Almost 600 images of the Beach in all seasons were submitted by Beach Photo Club members.

Support through Calendar sales will go to Community Centre 55 and the Beach Photo Club for their social service and community arts programs. The Beach Photo Club will produce the 2012 photo calendar, after a 2011 sellout with the calendars making their way to Beach friends and relatives around the globe. This year’s goal is to sell 2,000 copies.

Vistek will be the lead sponsor of The Beach 2012 Calendar. Vistek will produce large prints of the main images for Community Centre 55’s Silent Auction to support their Share a Christmas program. The Calendar will be officially launched at Community Centre 55 in early September.

BPC Members win at photography contest...

As part of the 2011 Doors Open Toronto theme of "Phototography", each historic site embraced the topic in a different way. The Factory Theatre did so by holding a photography contest, and thus put out a call for photographers to come and photograph the interior and exterior of the theatre as part of a contest. The prize was seasons tickets for the 2011/12 season at Factory Theatre, as well as being featured in the theatre's newsletter, and website.

Not only did three members of BPC: Mark Kremblowski, David Sweeney and Randy Rabolos, but they also took the three top spots of the contest. Each member submitted 3 images (an interior, an exterior, and a favourite). This is just another example of the amazing talent in our club! Way to go. Here are the three winning images in order of the above mentioned photographers:

In Camera Processing - did you know?

For many of us, learning all of the features inside of our camera's may take weeks or months, and even years. That is why I decided to write a brief article on a trend coming from Nikon's lineup of camera's with in-camera processing. The feature first appeared in the advanced amateur DSLR model from Nikon - the D90 in 2008. The camera featured a number of processing technique's and effects engines that could be applied to a RAW image, and then outputted as a jpeg image on the card. This feature is now in most advanced Nikon DSLR's since this time. The recent D7000 added a whole new level of image effects not previously available.

Among the in-camera processes available, one of my favourite on the D700/D300s has to be the in-camera RAW converter. The advantage of having this feature - is the ability to process a RAW file in the camera in the field, and then import it into a device such as an Ipad or Iphone, and send it electronically. A feature I am sure that would be helpful to photojournalists. (although the majority of PJ's shoot Jpeg to begin).

Note: In-Camera processes are available on the Nikon D700, D300s and D7000 and other similar models. From doing some breif reading on the internet, I believe that some Canon model of camera's do have retouch menu's, but I cannot comment or direct you on specifics.

Before we had electricity, moving water was the engine that turned the mill wheels of rural Canada, grinding grain into flour and providing a focal point for Ontario’s early communities. With the mill perched at the side of the stream, it wasn’t long until stores, a tavern, and a blacksmith shop were built nearby. Houses, churches and a school quickly followed.Over the past 150 years, most families have moved away from the land and into cities, leaving behind a way of life that defined early Ontario. But four decades ago, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority created a small agricultural community at Toronto’s northern edge that honours the ways of our early settlers. ZEN in the Art of Photography:A Classic Book Revisited by Photographers

www.zenentry.com In 1969 Robert Leverant first published the timeless book ‘Zen in the Art of Photography’. It has become a cult classic and the bible of photography for photographers around the world. The book is comprised of 162 ‘poetic stanzas’ that inspire and nurture readers. The book has been out of print and in demand for decades and in 2011 Robert Leverant is publishing an updated version. A multi-media exhibit and catalogue are planned to celebrate this much-anticipated event. Since 2009 Robert and three photographers: Jon Butler, Alfredo Marin-Carle and Marius Jomphe have interpreted 44 of the 162 ‘poetic stanzas’. The remaining 118 ‘poetic stanzas’ from the book will be open, as a contest, to be interpreted by 118 photographers from around the world. Both a catalogue and a multi-media exhibit then will be created using the 162 photographs and ‘poetic stanzas’ from ‘Zen in the Art of Photography’. Entries will be accepted from photographers, worldwide, until November 30, 2011. Every entrant receives an autographed copy of Robert Leverant's 'ZEN in the Art of Photography'.

In Peter Dudar’s hypnotic and vaguely menacing Starlings (At Nightfall), we are witness to a strange intersection between the forces of nature and a man made structure. A single, static, eight minute long shot documents the spiraling flight of thousands of starlings around a power transmission tower at dusk.

Peter Dudar is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist. Early on, he co-directed the multimedia partnership Missing Associates with dancer/choreographer Lily Eng. Missing Associates participated in the first performance art tour of Eastern and Western Europe by Canadian artists—and subsequently toured extensively in both Europe and North America. Next, Dudar screened internationally as a filmmaker. He was also a creative director for print, multimedia and online media. Currently, Peter Dudar primarily makes photo-based and video artwork.

GTCCC Judging - A Smooth Success

The digital judges scored 1060 yesterday, Saturday March 12 and did the sorting of honours this morning. Natalia was a non-scoring judge to give her some GTCCC experience.

The Beach Photo Club assisted with the judging of 376 prints, all completed on Saturday, March 12.

Beach 2011 Calendar Produces $2,904 For Community Centre 55 Programs

On March 3, 2011 Beach Photo Club proudly presents a $2,904 cheque to benefit Community Centre 55’s valued programs.

These proceeds come from the sale of 1,500 Beach 2011 Calendars, and 2 sets of large framed images from the Calendar. The prints & frames were supplied by Black’s Photography.

Produced by the Beach Photo Club, the 2011 Calendars went into three extra printings. These phenomenal sales were achieved through the generous support of local retailers, businesses, Community Centre 55, Black’s Photography, Beach Metro News, the Club members & of course the local residents that kept buying them.

The Calendars have also been sent right across Canada and around the world including the United States, the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, and Australia.

Locally, the main images were exhibited at the Beachside Grill in Toronto where the Club hangs four shows a year.

This year the Beach Photo Club plans to repeat this success to support Centre 55 and to enhance the Club’s educational programs. Members are now shooting pictures for The Beach 2012 Calendar.

CAPA Club Competition - Altered Reality

Back in Early January, we put out a Call For Submission: CAPA Altered Reality, Club Competition.

6 lucky members; Anthony George, David Sweeney, John Wallace, Julie Clark, Susan Lappin & Toni Wallachy, along with the assistance of Competition Chair Paul Vaculik were selected to represent the Beach Photo Club in our 1st CAPA club competition

The top club was the Toronto Camera Club with 141 points, 2nd - Langley Camera Club at 139 points and 3rd - Crescent Beach Photography Club with 136 points

Of the total of 27 clubs that entered, we place 17th with 117 points.

Top individual scorer was Philip Sun of the Toronto Camera Club with a perfect score of 30 which gave TCC the top spot. 2nd and 3rd were respectively Jen Fried of Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia at 29 and Bob Veigin of Central Okanagan with 27.

Photo Club member John Deweerd will be participating in the second annual Danforth East Arts Fair this coming weekend, September 18th and 19th. There will be a total of 50 artists displaying their creations at the Fair including other photographers, ceramic artists, jewelers, painters and fabric artists. On September 9th, Sean Galbraith will be launching his first solo exhibition which opens at Toronto Image Works gallery in Toronto. Sean is really excited about this exhibition, which is mostly comprised of new work created since he switched to shooting film. We hope you will enjoy the 49 images of our beloved Beach. We apologise there are only 6 of the Leuty Lifeguard Station but we figured other parts of the neighbourhood needed a chance too.

Twenty four members submitted 241 shots for consideration by two independent panels. The first panel looked at technical issues & at reducing the number of some of the more popular locations to the very best. The next panel then had the difficult job of picking the final 49 shots out of the remaining 124.

The team is currently finalising the layout & getting it ready for delivery to the printers. Then they move into Pre-Sale Mode. At that time they will have samples of the calendar & will be looking for volunteers to help pre sell to stores, realty agents, Dr’s, Lawyers, etc.

Timelines

• Initial run of calendars will be made in early September.

• Official launch with Centre 55 will occur in mid September.

• Calendars will be made available to members for sale by the second club meeting in September.

Stay tuned - more detailed information will be available as we come closer to our launch date!!!

Long point camping trip recap

Friday May 21st, Members from the BPC headed south west to the shores of Lake Erie. Here we would explore the marshes, dunes and beaches of Long Point Provincial Park. The annual spring camping trip has become a bit of a tradition at the club, having done it now for several years on the May 24 weekend.

This year would be no exception to our share of bugs, ticks, and other things that crawl in the night. Most of the group arrived at Long Point on the Friday just before dinner time, giving us enough time to set up camp, and head to the beach to check out the sunset action. The park is situated on a very long peninsula which stretches out into Lake Erie for several kilometers. The point is a unique biosphere with its own unique eco system. Everything that lives there supports life around it.

Over the weekend, we spent time exploring the area, checking out different sections of beach, roaming around some of the local towns such as the nearby Port Rowan. Looking for lighthouses, mills, and other things. We had a great time.

In Shooting Reality, multi-disciplinary artist Peter Dudar has come up with a provocative means of representing reality in fine art.

To do this, he advises 'cherry picking' aspects of photography, video and painting—and redeploying them so that they actually mean something in 2010.

Shooting Reality includes concurrent statements from artists, art critics, evolutionists and physicists such as: Robert Bresson, Fritjof Capra, Richard Dawkins, Paul Dirac, Walker Evans, Jean-Luc Godard, Philippe L. Gross, Mike Hoolboom, Mark Kingwell, W. J. T. Mitchell, Philip Monk, Peter Plagens, Gerhard Richter, Dot Tuer, and Bill Viola.

Perceiving reality, especially through movement, is the crux of Peter Dudar's own work. In Shooting Reality, he shows how this perception originated in his performance art—and informed his current photo-based and video projects.

AGO Adult Studio Courses

Hello Everyone - I hope you enjoyed Michael Bica's images during our April 15 members night showing. Here is some addtional information on the course that Michael spoke about.

As you may or may not know, the AGO Adult Studio courses have been cancelled in anticipation of the construction of The Weston Learning Centre to be opened in the Fall of 2011. As a result some of the instructors in the Adult Studio program have taken the initiative of establishing a site where art classes can continue. The site is at 230 Queen Street West in a space above El Mundo gift shop.

Two photography courses that may interest you:

Tuesday evening 7-10: Advanced Photography of the Figure
Wednesday evening 7-10: Introductory Photography

The courses are eight weeks in duration commencing May 3 and ending June 28. There is space for as many as 15 students in each course. The cost is $275 including GST.

The same courses will be offered during the Summer Session, commencing July 5 and ending August 30.

Out With The New, In With The Old

Some may say "in with the new, out with the old!" - But no, not I. Sometimes old is good, if not great, as in this case.

This image was part of a set of images taken over two years ago in one of my favourite places across the border, which I should add, is almost non-existent as it's on the verge of being torn down. Non-the-less, it was the beginning of a an amazing project that's still in the works (In Search of Venus).

As you can tell from the original image, the space was quite cramp and not easy to move around in. Quite a bit of post processing was needed just to straighten and align the image. It was the contrast between old and new, hard and soft that appealed to me. Which is probably why I processed the 2008 image with punchy, high contrasty over tones.

A lot has changed over the years. For one, I have been visually studying and learning new ways to post process my work with HDR and texture overlays. Giving images new life and drama. New software integration also makes it easy to jump between applications like Photomatix, Lightroom and Photoshop seamlessly.

So why keep those old images buried?? Go back and revisit them. Play and experiment with some of the new knowledge that you have picked up along the way and you just might be pleasantly surprised with the results.

Hi – in case you’re interested in submitting any photos to the Art of the Danforth photo mosaics, here’s a little information on what we’re up to...

About the display: photographers Steve Caissie and Mark Gilligan invite local photographers - amateur and pro - to contribute pictures of the neighborhood or of any aspect of their lives. These images will be cropped to 4" x 4" tiles and mounted together to create large photomosaics. The final mosaics will go on display in one of Greenwood, Coxwell or Woodbine subway stations during the Art of the Danforth.

Want to participate? Here's what to do!

First: let us know you're participating by emailing Mark & Steve at info@artofthedanforth.com
Second: take 30 photo broken up into the following categories:

5 Red photos, 5 Green photos, 5 Blue photos, 5 Yellow Photos, 5 photos that illustrate something interesting about your neighborhood and 5 photos of things that make you happy.
If you want to take less, that’s ok by us – but please make sure they fit into one or another category above. Photos that previously taken are fine if they fit the guidelines above and so long as you have the rights to share them.

New camera with a built in projector!

The Nikon Coolpix S1000pj is definitely a cool gadget. If you have not seen or heard about it yet, you are missing out. This seemingly ordinary compact camera has a very special feature: a built-in projector! At first I was extremely sceptical. What can a compact camera with a gimmicky looking feature like this do for me? After giving it a chance, this feature is actually really cool and has come handy in many social situations.My first hands-on experience with this camera was at a friend’s wedding a couple of weeks ago. A friend of mine bought a Coolpix S1000pj the day before the wedding and had not had a chance to play with it before the event. Since she had not used it before, she passed it off to me and asked me to take photos for her. I have shot weddings many times before, but never with a compact camera. Since I was not the official photographer for this wedding, it gave me an opportunity to shoot fun images of all the guests having a good time rather than just the wedding party and the bride and groom. The reception was the best part. I captured dancing, bouquet tossing, and the rest of the shenanigans you can expect to find at a wedding reception. I was impressed with the quality of images I was getting from this little camera. Although low-light performance has not always been Nikon’s strength in their compact line up, this model was getting pretty good results. When the party started to settle down, I asked my friend if I could try the projector mode out since I have never seen it in action. I popped the camera on our table and switched the camera to projector mode. It projected a 40-inch image on the white wall and displayed a slideshow of the entire day. Eventually we noticed that a crowd had formed around us. Even the bride came over to see what was going on. Everyone loved seeing the photos projected on the wall, and it was great how we could all laugh about the silly poses together. It was a definitely a big hit.After playing with my friend’s camera, I decided that I wanted one too. This camera has become my official party camera! Every time I bring it to a social event, people go crazy over it. For some reason, people love to watch and laugh about events that have just happened. I highly recommend this camera for the social butterfly, as it is a fun way to share your photos on the wall instantly. You can simply toss it in your pocket and bring it anywhere and everywhere. The show will be featured at the Surrey live site on February 19th, the Aboriginal pavilion in downtown Vancouver on the 21st, and the live site in Richmond on the 23rd. The world's oldest and most expensive camera

A Daguerréotype camera - one of the first commercially produced cameras - is set to go on sale with an estimated price of £600,000.That will make the wooden sliding-box 1839 camera, the oldest and most expensive in the world.It was built by Alphonse Giroux, the brother-in-law of Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre and is even signed by Daguerre himself, the inventor of the first practicable photographic process. The rare camera has been in private ownership in northern Germany for generations and the present owner’s father gave it to him in the 1970s as a present when he became an optician. It features a black velvet interior and ground-glass screen… no there is no autofocus or face.

Member News: David Sweeney to present photo project.

BPC Member and Vice-President David Sweeney will present his historical mills project to "The Tool Group of Canada" in Markham, Ontario this coming February 6th. David's presentation will be approximately 1 hour in length, and will give a brief overview of the importance of milling in Canada and as part of the industrial revolution. The connection that the milling industry gave to small towns in Ontario to larger industrial centre's such as Toronto. And he will feature some of the mills he has visited over the past 3 years which have a strong connection to the tool group. This will be a slightly shorter version of a similar presentation that David will give the BPC on June 3rd.

Photo Tip of the Day

Here's a tip I hope you can share with club members.

If you are having trouble attaching a photo file (JPG) to an email, there could be something wrong with the META DATA that every digital image contains. If that data is corrupted for some reason, the photo may cause problems in transmission. For example, I recovered some images off a formatted hard drive and though they appeared OK, when I tried to email one I kept getting an error message.

Here's what to do: Open the photo in Photoshop. Select the photo using Select All. Under Edit, select Copy. Close the photo. Under Edit, select New. Just accept what is presented in the pop up box that appears. Now go to Edit again and select Paste.

Flatten the image (MERGE THE LAYERS) then select Save As and rename it with a short file name. Note, this creates a file with NO META DATA, so the time of capture, date etc. will not be included in the file. Also, make sure the format is 8 bit, not 16.

The photo attached is for reference. I added the Title and Author using File Info, which is now the new, imbedded Meta Data. This is a good way to protect images from copyright infringement.

The free software I used to retrieve my data is called Recuva http://www.piriform.com/recuva

December 17 Holiday Social at the Beachside Grill!

Reporting out on the Beach Photo Club's Thurs Dec 17 holiday social at the Beachside Grill!

Owner Al gave over the back room to 2 dozen photographers who enjoyed excellent food while basking in the Club's 2nd-ever exhibit at the Grill. Amid framed images of snow flakes, sledding, and scenes from the Beach, members wrestled with gift exchanges back and forth, as if capturing the last rays of the setting sun. Debates over hanging vertical versus horizontal, large versus small, colour versus monochrome receded as the membership led by Toni Wallachy reflected on our collective successes of this year. Always dubbed the last minute club, this year's member who visited the most number of other places with Beach or related concept while trying to locate the group of diners was Steve, you know who you are. Second place for false starts was a leading real estate agent househunting in the general neighbourhood. But first place for imagination goes to the Beachside Grill for accepting our artistic genius and taking a leap of faith with the Beach Photo Club. Our next exhibit at the Grill starts in February, can't wait. Happy New Year!

Outing: Black Creek Pioneer Village

On Sunday December 20th, 3 members from the Beach Photo Club enjoyed the sight and sounds of Black Creek Pioneer Village. Decorate in the Victorian period, the village hosts visitors to experience a traditional Christmas as would be experienced in the mid 1800's. Many of the buildings and houses are dressed in festive garlands making for beautiful images. A great place to capture some images for your Christmas cards! Some members especially enjoy the wood burning oven's and stove's as this time of year they are very active, and dancing fires make for wonderful pictures. If you are planning to visit the village, unfortunately they are now closed for the season as of December 23rd, but will re-open in May 2010.

Pervasive Influence

From within the midst of the Still Revolution in photography, we witness the transformation of the medium alongside the shifting social, political and cultural events of our times. In this era of instant information the image is stimulating sweeping, unprecedented change in the way we communicate.

In 1964 Marshall McLuhan wrote of the photograph as "The Brothel without Walls". He referred to a theatrical work by Jean Genet, which depicted society as a brothel surrounded by a revolution. McLuhan described photographs as "dreams that money can buy" which could be "hugged and thumbed more easily than public prostitutes." If we consider his metaphor within today's global culture rife with media saturation, is the illusion images create now preferable to reality? Has the authority of the photograph been enhanced over time? Does it command our choices and grow stronger as the technology evolves? Or is photography losing its power to communicate ideas? Is its ability to convey meaning now diluted by the widespread dissemination of images?

CONTACT 2010 will consider the ways in which photography informs and transforms human behavior. The festival will recognize the influence of Marshall McLuhan, on the 30th anniversary year of his death. We will present images that examine connections between mass media, advertising, art and photography. This includes conceptual approaches to photography that utilize the codes of advertising, the language of consumerism, the stylization of marketing campaigns and the force of propaganda. Photojournalism and socially concerned documentary photography will provide a realist-based examination of the emotional and political impact of images and their effect on society and culture. CONTACT 2010 will explore the personal and social consequences of the medium of photography, in a society devoted to the image.

An opportunity to go in before hours if we get 8 people to sign up. Here we can use our tripods for 2 hours before they opening at 10:00am. Closes this day at 2:00 pm.

This would be a great opportunity to try out any macro shots as well for third contest, or any Nature shots for the GTCCC competition, or just take in the butterlies for the day.

Another successful evening has come and gone for the 2009 Little Art Show. The Artists Network of Riverdale's largest fund raiser of the year.

The night sped by from 0 to 100/mph, in just a few hours at Toronto's landmark Mercedes dealership. With over 160 artists participating in the silent auction component and 22 members participating in the newly added "Large Piece" Gallery exhibit, and of course, can't forget to mention, the charming Jake Gold, of Canadian Idol, our MC, kept us on tract and entertained through-out the evening with artist interviews.

This is one of the few more glamourous ways artists can get out and network with potential buyers as well as other artists. A far cry from the usual blood, sweat and tears that come along with participating in outdoor art shows.
