Outing: Black Creek Pioneer Village

On Sunday December 20th, 3 members from the Beach Photo Club enjoyed the sight and sounds of Black Creek Pioneer Village. Decorate in the Victorian period, the village hosts visitors to experience a traditional Christmas as would be experienced in the mid 1800's. Many of the buildings and houses are dressed in festive garlands making for beautiful images. A great place to capture some images for your Christmas cards! Some members especially enjoy the wood burning oven's and stove's as this time of year they are very active, and dancing fires make for wonderful pictures. If you are planning to visit the village, unfortunately they are now closed for the season as of December 23rd, but will re-open in May 2010.

Time is Running Out - GTCCC Critique Session December 15

Time to start thinking about GTCCC selections. With so many amazing images that were submitted for our 1st competition, I would think that getting entries for this year’s GTCCC competition will be a breeze. The images that placed in our 1st competition just may be the next GTCCC 1st, 2nd or 3rd place winners. I have attached the rules.

To assist you in choosing your best images, we will hold a critique evening Tuesday December 15 at the church at 7:30pm. David sweeney and Natalia Shields will be on hand to discuss images. Group and solo critiques available.

CONTACT 2010 THEMATIC FOCUS

Pervasive Influence

From within the midst of the Still Revolution in photography, we witness the transformation of the medium alongside the shifting social, political and cultural events of our times. In this era of instant information the image is stimulating sweeping, unprecedented change in the way we communicate.

In 1964 Marshall McLuhan wrote of the photograph as "The Brothel without Walls". He referred to a theatrical work by Jean Genet, which depicted society as a brothel surrounded by a revolution. McLuhan described photographs as "dreams that money can buy" which could be "hugged and thumbed more easily than public prostitutes." If we consider his metaphor within today's global culture rife with media saturation, is the illusion images create now preferable to reality? Has the authority of the photograph been enhanced over time? Does it command our choices and grow stronger as the technology evolves? Or is photography losing its power to communicate ideas? Is its ability to convey meaning now diluted by the widespread dissemination of images?

CONTACT 2010 will consider the ways in which photography informs and transforms human behavior. The festival will recognize the influence of Marshall McLuhan, on the 30th anniversary year of his death. We will present images that examine connections between mass media, advertising, art and photography. This includes conceptual approaches to photography that utilize the codes of advertising, the language of consumerism, the stylization of marketing campaigns and the force of propaganda. Photojournalism and socially concerned documentary photography will provide a realist-based examination of the emotional and political impact of images and their effect on society and culture. CONTACT 2010 will explore the personal and social consequences of the medium of photography, in a society devoted to the image.

Another successful evening has come and gone for the 2009 Little Art Show. The Artists Network of Riverdale's largest fund raiser of the year.

The night sped by from 0 to 100/mph, in just a few hours at Toronto's landmark Mercedes dealership. With over 160 artists participating in the silent auction component and 22 members participating in the newly added "Large Piece" Gallery exhibit, and of course, can't forget to mention, the charming Jake Gold, of Canadian Idol, our MC, kept us on tract and entertained through-out the evening with artist interviews.

This is one of the few more glamourous ways artists can get out and network with potential buyers as well as other artists. A far cry from the usual blood, sweat and tears that come along with participating in outdoor art shows.

If you want more information on how you can participate in next years event, check out the Artists Network web site. The Network also offers workshops, networking opportunities and offers dicounted gallery space to it's members. It's worth the boo.

The New Mamiya DM22

MAMIYA NEWS8 Westchester Plaza, Elmsford, NY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEMORE INFORMATION

Mamiya Debuts DM22 Digital Camera for under $10K
Elmsford, NY – October 20, 2009 – Mamiya, synonymous with professional photography, has introduced a new 22MP, 36x48mm digital camera selling for $9,995. The Mamiya DM22, slated for November delivery, is the perfect choice for photographers when 35mm-sized DSLRs are not good enough. In fashion work, studio product photography, industrial/scientific or other demanding photographic specialties, medium format photography is in many people’s eyes hands-down the winner over 35mm-based digital. The DM22 is the affordable way to achieve that superiority.

“For years, many professional photographers have been relegated to consumer-like DSLR systems, simply due to the high cost of recognized pro-level digital equipment,” says Mamiya Product Marketing Manager Mike Edwards. “This new camera features a premium-quality 22 megapixel sensor, and true 16bit/channel RAW files, resulting in richly detailed images that leave a vibrant and lasting impression for both the photographer and client. We recognize photographers’ need to deliver exceptional quality photographs, along with an impression of professionalism, which a 35mm-sized DSLR cannot present. Files can be processed using either of the included software solutions: Capture One™ by Phase One or Leaf Capture™, or photographers can choose to use Adobe Lightroom™ (not included) allowing the widest variety of professional processing software options available. This is definitely an opportunity to put the finest technology to work at a most affordable price.”

The new camera has an estimated street price of $9,995. It’s being introduced at the same time as the Mamiya DM28, with a street price of $14,990. Both cameras come with the sharp Mamiya 80mm f/2.8 D Series lens, focal plane shutter, and are fully compatible with any Mamiya AF focal plane series lens. In addition, they can be used with older 645MF and Hasselblad lenses (via #310-244 adapter), both in stop-down mode.
Both the DM22 and DM28 feature Mamiya’s new Guaranteed Trade-Up Program, which offers purchasers of new Mamiya digital products the peace of mind of knowing they can safely choose the right product for their specific needs.

The DM22 features a 48x36mm sensor, 5356x4056 pixels, and an ISO range of 25-400. The RAW file is the Mosaic format, HDR-type, with 16 bits/channel and a dynamic range of 12 f/stops. Image storage is either on a CF card or via FireWire™. The DM28 is identical except its sensor is 44x33mm, 6144x4622 pixels, and an ISO range of 50-800.

Pikto now does Light Jet printing!

Pikto recently introduced a new printing service. Lightjet printing uses laser's to transmit light onto traditional photographic paper.

Within the equipment, there are three lasers, red, green and blue, which are merged into a single beam that simultaneously exposes the photographic material, producing the image in a single pass. The photographic material is then processed in the same manner as traditional photography by developing the photographic material in a "wet" film processor. By using the lasers, the total image is crisp and precise edge to edge, with no distortion. All of this means that the quality of a Lambda print will be much better in terms of clarity, sharpness and in colour saturation than other large format printing processes.

For more information on Lightjet printing prices. Visit http://www.pikto.ca/

Learn From the Masters

Freeman Paterson come to Montreals Lake Shore Camera Club

Freeman believes a sound knowledge of visual design is fundamental to clear visual expression, and focuses on this in his illustrated talk and lecture.

This presentation is on “seeing” and visual design, that is, using good visual design to communicate what you see and how you feel about what you see. Using visual design as the craft of visual communication and expression (direct comparisons with the design of language).

Freeman emphasizes that this presentation will be of value not only to photographers, but to all visual artists and designers. In essence, to anyone who creates any kind of 'image' or 'scene' for our viewing pleasures.

Old Western Town Photoshoot

Reposting from an email we received from the Toronto Photographic meetup group (Not to be confused with TPMG).

Announcing a new Meetup for TORONTO PHOTOGRAPHIC

What: Old Western Town Photoshoot ... Yipie Yi-ay
When: August 30, 2009 5:00 PM
Price: CAD10.00 per person
Where:
Old Western Town
Pickering/Uxbridge
Pickering, ON L1V 0A1
Howdy Pardners!!
This is an exciting and absolutely amazing place to shoot pictures. You can smell and feel the Old West as you drive around the bend on this property to see this amazing replica of an old Western Town. The grounds are rich with old buildings, textures, props and even an old piano that will make your heart skip a beat! This unique town has endless photographic possibilities!! You won't find any prop "cut-out" store fronts, you can walk into each building and there are endless shots from endless angles. Pretty good chance we will have some folks stopping by on their horses also, which adds another dimension to the shoot.
The ?Old West? town makes you feel like you stepped back in time!
This meetup will happen on a private property, and we will be the only group in the Town. I will send out the exact location a few days before the event to those who will be attending. It is in the Pickering/Uxbridge area. There will be a charge of 10 dollars to cover the cost of renting the town.
Since this is a long shoot - please feel free to bring a lawn chair and something to eat as well as drink. Don't forget to bring along your cowboy hat and boots!!! A few models dressed in Western wear will be joining us.
We will have the "Town" from 5 pm to 10 pm. The town lights will be turned on at dusk.
Now for the weather - please check back on the meetup site the day of the shoot. I'm not anticipating rain! :)
When I was at this site last week - I took ahem - 400 plus shots - and I've posted some of them in an album on our meetup site. Just imagine the possibilities!
Look forward to seeing you there!

Kodak To Stop Producing Kodachrome film in 2009.

This is a republication from the Wall Street Journal, Monday June 22nd:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124567093975236801.html

Eastman Kodak Co. said Monday it will discontinue its iconic Kodachrome color film this year due to tumbling sales as photographers embrace newer Kodak films or digital-imaging technology.
Kodak introduced the amateur color film in 1935 and it became the first commercially successful color film. But sales are just a fraction of 1% of the company's still-picture film revenue. The company doesn't break out such figures, but the segment in which Kodak's film sales are recorded had first-quarter revenue of $503 million.

Associated Press Photographer Steve McCurry posed for a portrait with a poster of his iconic photo of an Afghan girl. Those numbers and the unique materials needed to make it convinced Kodak to call its most recent manufacturing run the last, said Mary Jane Hellyar, the outgoing president of Kodak's film, photofinishing and entertainment group. "Kodachrome is particularly difficult [to retire] because it really has become kind of an icon,'' Ms. Hellyar said.
It was the basis not only for countless family slideshows on carousel projectors over the years but also for world-renowned images, including Abraham Zapruder's 8 mm reel of President John F. Kennedy's assassination on Nov. 22, 1963.

The last rolls of the film will be donated to George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester, N.Y., which houses the world's largest collection of cameras and related artifacts. In addition, Steve McCurry—known for a 1985 photo of a young Afghan girl peering from the cover of National Geographic magazine—will shoot one of those last rolls and the images will be donated to Eastman House.

"I want to take [the last roll] with me and somehow make every frame count... just as a way to honor the memory and always be able to look back with fond memories at how it capped and ended my shooting Kodachrome,'' Mr. McCurry said last week from Singapore, where he has an exhibition.

Outings: Recapping the waterfall outing.

Hello all,

Saturday June 6th waterfall outing / mentoring session was very successful, with a lot of familiar faces in the crowd! We visited Tiffany Falls in the morning, and had good light, with the falls mostly in the shade. Typically when shooting waterfalls, overcast days are preferable, which made for some interesting shooting on this day. We next headed upstream to Washboard falls which is actually located at the top of Tiffany falls, but requires a drive around the corner for better access. And our last waterfall location of the day (and lunch stop) was Waterdown falls, a favorite of mine, and others. We unfortunately had direct sunlight at Waterdown, which made for some challenging shooting, but I know for myself, I came away with a few nice images.

We ended the day off with a visit to the abandoned mill in Georgetown (Barber Mill), which was going to be redeveloped into a condo / retail complex, but that project fell by the wayside. The site is for sale, but I would imagine that it would take a pretty hefty investment to keep the heritage aspects of the site, and make it safe for the public at the same time. The site offered great advantages to shoot urban decay, and for myself had even more significance given my historic mill project that I am presently working on.

I will upload some pictures in the coming week from the outing. Thank you to all who came, hope you had a good day!

Waterfall Workshop - June 6th 2009, 8:00am

Have you always wondered how other photographers get those milky shots of water? Wanted to try it for yourself, but need help. Or perhaps you love the power of the water, and want to capture the patterns produced by rushing water. Then this workshop / outing is for you! David Sweeney will guide members to several waterfall locations in the Hamilton and Dundas Valley area approx. 1 hour west of Toronto. We will spend some time at the first location going over some of the basics with regards to shooting water, the tools used to create these images, and other aspects such as safety, weather conditions, etc.

It is highly recommended that everyone attending owns a tripod, and brings it! We will use our tripods. It is also recommended to purchase a neutral density filter (ND-4 is perfect!). Either a screw on type filter, or a graduated ND filter such as the ones made by Cokin or Singh-Ray. If you do not have one, David has a couple of spare you can play with.

Itenerary for the day as follows:

8:00am - meet @ Starbucks in the Beach (Across from the running room)
9:15am - Approximate Arrival, Tiffany Falls (Hamilton), talk and demo to follow upon arrival, approx 20 minutes.
10:20am - Back to cars, drive to Washboard Falls with arrival approx 10:35am.
10:40am - talk about classifications of waterfalls - shoot @ washboard falls.
11:00am - Transport to Albion Falls
11:20am - Arrive @ Albion Falls - shoot to 12:30pm
12:30pm - Lunch.

1:00pm - transport to Waterdown Falls
1:30pm - Waterdown Falls, shoot until 2:15pm. Present additional falls as an option.
Approx end of workshop 2-3pm - TBD - based on a number of factors.

PLEASE PACK A LUNCH! We will eat in the park.

A New Direction For Visual Arts Ontario

Over the past year Visual Arts Ontario has been undergoing a comprehensive strategic planning process. Culminating in a summit in Toronto at the end of January, our goal was to determine whether we were meeting the needs of our members and fostering the careers of artists in Ontario in the most effective way possible.
What our members, other artists and colleagues involved in our strategic planning process have told us was that artists need a place to collaborate and connect throughout a career often practiced in isolation. In contrast to our current model of delivering publications and workshops, artists need to both give and receive feedback, support and advice. An artist in Tobermory no longer needs someone from Toronto to send her a print booklet on how to photograph art. That resource is easily found online. What is lacking is a wide net that connects her quickly and inexpensively, to a photographer, a supplier, a confidant, a mentor, a distant gallery with a proposal call that closes in a few days, a piece of sound career advice, or perhaps just to another artist who happens to live around the corner. That net is the new VAO.

The Board's vision for the future of VAO is of an open, collaborative online hub for Ontario artists: a vibrant destination for artists and art-interested people to connect, build a tribe, and foster a resource-rich community. While foraging for that perfect morsel of advice or support, members can also plug into other networks based on geographic area, media or career aspirations.

There is much work to be done for VAO to take this leap forward. We are maintaining relationships with current funding partners, involving them in our transition strategy and ensuring that we have their support. We will work hard to secure additional funding partners who will support a new business model for VAO. We will continue to be available to our members, implementing a transition plan to help them and the organization define and embrace a new model. A strategy to ensure we meet service commitments to members is clearly laid out on our website along with our Strategic Report.

This is a time of great adventure for Visual Arts Ontario and we thank you for your ongoing support. We look forward to keeping you informed of our strategy as we move forward. To continue receiving further updates from Visual Arts Ontario visit our website and sign up to our free e-mailing list.

If you have any comments or feedback for the Board at this time please do not hesitate to call.

Take More, And Erase Your Shots

Digital Photography Secret 5

The ability to erase your photos is one of the major advantages of a digital camera. You'd be mad not to use this to the fullest extent!

Take MANY more shots than you think you need, and then erase those that aren't right.
Every half an hour, go back through your most recent photos erase any that don't make the grade, or you have better versions of.

Because you'll be erasing often you can just keep the 'best of the best'. Erasing often also ensures you don't need a large memory card, as it will not be storing your not-so-perfect images.

If you're always pressed for time, you can either invest in a larger memory card, or copy your images to another storage device like a laptop or card storage unit until a later point.

This is also a huge tip when photographing groups. With such a large number of people, there always seems to be someone blinking, or looking the other way. Having a large number of shots means you can pick the best of them to keep.

Next time : Sick of the wait between when you press the shutter and when the shot is taken? This secret will eliminate this!

Photographing Children

Digital Photography Secret 4

by David Peterson

Children make a wonderful subject. Here are some tips for ensuring photos of children are even more memorable.

Meet them eye-to-eye

Bring yourself down to the child.s level . even if you need to crouch down. This will give your shots a 'kids eye view' and won't distort their image (as taking the shot from above does).

Capture natural expressions

While posed shots are great, often better results can be gained by capturing an image when their thoughts are preoccupied with something else . eg while at play. You.ll capture their faces enjoying the moment rather than thinking about the camera.

Familiarity ensures success

Children who have grown up having their photo taken will be a lot less likely to freeze or show off in front of a camera. Start early and make photo taking a part of every day out.

Children grow up quicklyRecord their growth from toddler to child to young adult by taking a family photo every year around the same time . either the first day of school, or during spring events.

Next Time : A technique for ensuring that with every group of photos you take, you'll always have a couple of great ones.

Photo Tip 3 -- Place Your Subject Off-center

Place your subject off-center

Digital Photography Secret 3
by David Peterson

Rather than placing your main subject in the middle of the screen, place it to one side and ensure something interesting is in the background that fills the remainder of the image.

This can be specially effective if the background has the same theme. For example, if photographing a child opening a Christmas present, frame them to one side and have the Christmas Tree with unopened presents filling the rest of the image.

There are a few guidelines that can help you place your subject in the frame.

The Rule of Thirds

One of the most popular rules in photography is the "Rule of Thirds". It is a simple rule that can add dynamism to your photos. Simply, divide the image into thirds both horizontally and vertically. When composing your shot, place important elements either along these lines, or where the lines intersect - NOT at the centre of the frame.

For example, place a subject's eyes where the top line is, or place your subject on the place in the image where two of these lines intersect.

It's a very simple rule to follow and will result in a nicely balanced, easy on the eye picture. It also helps get rid of the 'tiny subject and large amount of space' tendency because you need to position items relative to the edges of the frame.

Having said this, the Rule of Thirds is also one of the rules you'll want to break often! This is fine - the Rule of Thirds is more of a guideline and sometimes you will find a better image when you break the rule.

Photo Tip 2 -- Use Optical Rather Than Digital Zoom

Informative info from a mini course on digital secrets by David Peterson. A new tip was sent every day for three weeks, also many bonus tips followed after that. Use Optical rather than Digital Zoom

Digital Photography Secret 2
by David Peterson

Cameras are marketed with both an Optical Zoom and Digital Zoom capability.

If you've used a film camera, you'll be used to optical zoom. Optical zoom uses the lens of the camera (the optics) to bring the subject closer. Digital zoom uses clever software to digitally enlarge a portion of the image - thus simulating optical zoom.

So, which is better? Definitely Optical zoom. Here's why.

Digital zoom is not really 'zoom' in the strictest definition of the term. Digital zoom just enlarges the image. Eg it takes a portion of the image and enlarges it back to full size. You lose quality because of the enlargement process so photos that have been taken with digital zoom won't look as good as those without.

You can perform the same result using image editing software on your computer. In fact, it can be better to crop and enlarge using your image software in your computer as you can decide exactly what part of the image to enlarge, and how much to enlarge by.

So when taking shots, use optical zoom only. If you need to zoom in further, use your editing software to select the best part of the image to keep. Ensure your camera warns you when it's switching to digital zoom from optical zoom, or use your settings to disable digital zoom entirely.
Why is clarity important? The more clarity you have in your image, the larger the printed size can be without the image appearing fuzzy, or blocky. If you want to keep clarity in your images, use the optical zoom whenever possible, and avoid the digital zoom.

How do you use Optical Zoom? When you zoom in using your camera, it will use Optical zoom first and then use Digital zoom. You can usually set your camera to notify you when it starts to use the Digital zoom, or tell it to not use digital zoom at all. Consult your manual for details.
Next time : A little known secret, used all the time by professionals, that result in a pleasing, nicely balanced photo.
